Der Prototyp ist grün und gelb mit einem leuchtenden Buntschirm und einer auffälligen Kurbel, um die Batterien auch ohne elektrische Energie wieder aufzuladen. Der Laptop ist eine Ansammlung von ökonomischer Technologie, Beschaffenheit und open source Software. Der Laptop wurde letztes November in Tunisi offiziell präsentiert. Das Projekt One Laptop per Child (OLPC) ist ehrgeizig: man will anfangs zwischen 5 und 10 Millionen Stücke produzieren und sie in den Entwicklungsländer verkaufen. Der Zweck ist den Kindern dieser Länder „ein Fenster auf der Welt zu öffnen“ und gleichzeitig ihnen ein Mittel zu geben, um „durch die Interaktion und die autonome Exploration zu lernen“. Es wird vorausgesehen, dass die Laptops zwischen Ende 2006 und Anfang 2007 bereit werden. Aus diesem Grund ist die Aktivität im Sitz der OLPC hektisch. In den nächsten Wochen wird die operative Phase beginnen und es werden Abkommen mit den ersten Ländern getroffen.
